Hello, Bluebird Families!
What an amazing week we had in Kindergarten! We celebrated a birthday of one of our Bluebirds and completed more projects for the art show! We read I Spy Shapes in Art by Lucy Micklethwait and looked through many famous paintings for shapes. We also read Shape Space by Catherine Falwell. This book tells a fun story, but the best part is the illustrations, which are completely made of shapes. Then we created our own art using only shapes. I loved seeing what your children decided to make with their shapes!
We read Camille and the Sunflowers by Laurence Anholt, which gave us a small glimpse into the life of VanGogh. Then we read Vincent’s Colors from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The really amazing thing about this book is that all the words and pictures are directly from Van Gogh himself. After learning about Van Gogh and admiring his beautiful paintings, we made our own versions of his Starry Night. We drew night pictures with oil pastels and then painted with blue watercolor over top of our drawings. We loved seeing the oil pastels pop back out from under the watercolor.
I hope by now you have seen your child’s art portfolio that came home on Friday. It is packed full of their beautiful masterpieces. To get a fuller picture of what our class and school have been doing this month, please look through all the art show pictures we posted on Friday on the Children’s Garden Instagram. Also, take some time to go through your child’s art portfolio with them. Have them explain how they created each piece. I know some of my Bluebirds were hoping to teach their parents how to make pom poms. Even if you already know, let them show you! Teaching is a part of their learning process. Having to explain how to do something is so good for their brains!
Of all the stories that we read this month about creating art, appreciating art, or famous artists, I think the Bluebirds had a definite favorite: Extra Yarn by Mac Barnett. It is such a fun story about the power of creating beauty and kindness in the world. In case your child would enjoy hearing it again, here it is being read online:
Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving! I look forward to seeing you again on Monday, November 30th.
Thank you for sharing your children with me!
Anna
