Hello, Bluebird Families!
We read several more caterpillar and butterfly books this week. We found it so interesting to compare different eggs, caterpillars, chrysalises, and butterflies! There is such an amazing variety of colors, shapes, and patterns! We were in awe of the biggest butterly in the world, which is 12 inches across and lives in Papau New Guinea, as well as the smallest butterfly in the world, which is as small as a grain of rice and lives in Afghanistan. We were shocked to learn that our monarchs will fly all the way to Mexico for the winter and then return here in the spring to lay their eggs. We think mama butterflies are so smart to lay their eggs on the plants that their baby caterpillars will need to eat when they hatch. We released another monarch this week and have one chrysalis left to watch.
We finished making our beautiful butterflies that you can see on our classroom curtains. We played in butterfly life cycle sensory bins. We have also been experimenting with letter combinations, making our names and other words we find important, as well as putting the letters of the alphabet in order. Some of the children love the challenge of making a backwards alphabet!
On Friday, we went for a nature walk. We discussed beforehand that we would need to move along together slowly, so that we could notice interesting things and show each other. I loved seeing the children’s excitement at finding beauty in nature! There were so many moments I wish I could have captured on camera for you. “Wow, look at this!” “Did you notice this?” We found many intriguing mushrooms, but left them alone, enjoying them only with our eyes. We collected some special finds and created gorgeous nature collages, which came home that day.
Please remember that this Friday, October 8th we have an early release at 12 noon, and we are closed for a teacher work day on Monday, October 11th.
Thank you for sharing your children with me!
