Hello, Bluebird Families!
We came back from our Thanksgiving break so happy to see one another! I was amazed at how easily the children adjusted to wearing masks inside. They have truly been incredible, without complaining! They simply do what they need to do. Thank you for your efforts to support your Bluebird, making sure they have a mask on when they arrive at the outside door and putting extra masks in their backpack every day! By each of us doing our part, we are all making our school days safe and fun in the midst of the COVID crisis. Thank you!
This week we learned about birds migrating south for the winter. The children were fascinated by the book How Do Birds Find Their Way? written by Roma Gans and illustrated by Paul Mirocha. They learned about the different signs in nature that help birds know when it is time to migrate. They were amazed at the compass-like features of a bird’s brain that help it get from the north to the south and back again, sometimes even to the exact same nest! They also enjoyed My Happy Year by E. Bluebird by Paul Meisel, which follows the first year of life of an Eastern Bluebird. It was fun to see the bluebird change from hatching out of its egg, getting brave enough to leave the nest, learning to fly, learning to find food, flying south for the winter, enjoying the warmth and abundant food of the south, returning to the north in the spring, finding a mate, building a nest, and laying eggs of its own.
On Tuesday, we were so excited to play outside in the snow! We also loved making snowflakes out of coffee filters to decorate our classroom windows. This week we enjoyed playing with some new toys in our classroom: a puppet show set, a cash register, a vet kit, and a doctor kit.
We have been reviewing letter sounds and the children are doing so well! After winter break, I plan to introduce putting those letter sounds together to start reading some words! It’s so exciting to see their growth!
Thank you for sharing your children with me!
