The beautiful fall weather during the month of October begged us to be outside. We went on many nature walks. Students enjoyed carrying the basket where we placed all of our precious leaves, sticks, pine cones, and rocks. These items often found their way inside out classroom. We used them in sensory bins, they provided inspiration as loose parts, and we often painted some of the items or painted with them.
After getting settled into our new classroom we started to explore our alphabet using our current themes. Students are getting excited about some of our more academic “Quiet Baskets” that encourage alphabet and phonics exploration. By the end of October our Foxes were counting apples and pumpkins and excited about using the dry erase boards to write them.
In the Friendly Fox room we are all about play. Our daily rhythms and our room layout provided plenty of time and space for children to interact, play, discover, and even retreat for some quiet time alone.
October also kept us busy peeling apples and making apple sauce, carving pumpkins, counting seeds, and hammering golf tees into a giant heirloom pumpkin. The end of the month culminated in a fantastic Fall Festival. It was so much fun to celebrate with our friends. Pumpkin bowling was lots of fun while they cheered each other on. And the hay ride around the playground was definitely a hit with the kids. The kids sampled pumpkin muffins, apple cider (they helped make), and we had to party with some popcorn!
Our author of the month was Leo Leonni. This author often has a very clever character who uses his unique strengths to accomplish something special. I’m pretty sure we will revisit this author and these books in the spring.
Get ready for November. All three classes will be exploring different kinds of art and a variety of artists. I can’t wait. Be sure to stay connected to your child’s classroom by following our Instagram account : https://www.instagram.com/childrensgardenschool/
These kiddos are so curious and kind, it really is a pleasure to spend my day with them. Their inquisitive minds and imagination have me digging for answers and inspired every single day.
