Hello, Sweet Families!
We’ve had a wonderful week exploring the wonders of Winter and the science of snow. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed playing together outside on our big grassy hill and in our pine forest. We are greatly anticipating the Winter storm that is heading our way, perfect timing for our Winter studies!
This week we read some wonderful books about the science of snow, such as “The Snow Show,” and we learned lots of amazing things about snowflakes such as how they form from just a speck of something floating in the atmosphere, collecting freezing water droplets along their way to earth, the beautiful shapes they can become, how unique they are, and even how big they can get! We have learned lots of scientific words about snow, like crystals, hexagons, molecules, and dendrites! We all got to hold various examples of the types of shapes that snow crystals can become. We read and learned all about “Snowflake Bentley,” the first person to photograph snowflakes. We looked at his beautiful photography (lots of “oooos” and “aaaaahhhhs!”), made our own Winter collages, made playdough snowpeople, and added our sweet Snowflake song to our special journals. We built snowflakes together with loose parts and in crafts, played a fun Snowman button counting game, made our own snowman puzzles, built our own beautiful snowflakes out of loose parts, and played in lots of different miniature Winter animal wonderlands.
Next week we will introduce our Animals in Winter theme and begin learning about hibernation, migration, and adaptation. I have lots of fun activities planned for this unit! As a reminder, school is closed on Monday in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Have a wonderful time together in the snow!
Warmth and peace,
Wynne
