It’s exciting to finally focus on bees in our class. We’ve learned so much in one week, and we’ll continue talking about honeybees this week. The class has learned so much vocabulary! They have been talking about who in their family is a drone and who is a worker bee. We are reading lots of bee books, and talking about the set up of hives, both in nature and the kind of hives beekeepers use.
Last week we also played with our math skills during Discovery Time. Did you see them doing our log stepping game? We have been working on recognizing the numbers 1-10 and putting them in order.
Tomorrow is the vernal equinox, and both hemispheres of the earth will share the sun equally. We’ll model this with our globe. It will be a chilly first day of Spring, but we have some big things to change on our calendar. Tomorrow we’ll have our own small Cherry Blossom Festival, creating a process art “cherry blossom” with paint, enjoying some sensory play with an assortment of flowers, and perhaps having another honey and apple snack. I’ll show the Honeybees the Cherry Blossom Festival in Japan, and we’ll play with some Japanese puppets at circle time.
Things I’m thinking about for the Honeybees in April and May…. A family field trip to Glade Road Growing. They are getting their baby pigs tomorrow! I did this trip for the first time last year, and all of my families loved being together and having time to get to know each other. We have missed so much community building time during Covid. I’m also thinking about learning about birds, making our bird book, hatching our spring chickens, playing our way through a dinosaur unit, and learning about fossils.
