Let’s start with a spring song, and then we can extend it to create a math activity if your child is interested.
Next, find a set of numbers up to ten. It could be a wooden number puzzle that you could put in a basket, plastic number magnets from your fridge, or a set of smooth rocks with the numbers written on them with a Sharpie. They could even be paper, but I like something a little more tactile. Arrange your numbers in order and pick up or point to the number that the song is singing. If your child is confident recognizing most of the numbers you could make it a game and mix up the numbers. Keep some paper or a clipboard nearby because this activity might inspire drawing or writing.
I shared several resources over on our Instagram stories yesterday showing some math centers you could easily create in your own home if your child is interested in numbers. Imagine the possibilities of two egg cartons, a number puzzle, a cup of beans, some scales, number cards, dice, and graduated measuring cups. Let the play happen.
You can download some number cards here, or you could make your own with your child. You child can choose the loose parts and you can form the numbers ( or letters) with your child and take pictures. They could be printed on paper or delivered from someplace like Snapfish or Shutterfly.
I tuned my ukulele yesterday and have started doing more beginner classes on the computer. I got a ukulele because I wanted to learn how to play this song for the Honeybees last year.
I’ve been participating in a yearlong course in play based learning called The Wonder Tribe, and I recently bought Sally Haughey’s book Wonder Art Workshop. Parents, you don’t have to be crafty or artistic to set your child up to make beautiful, meaningful art. It is the process itself that sparks their imagination, sense of experimentation, and the joy of discovery.
Let’s make some homemade stampers. Do you have any wine corks or small blocks? These will be the base of your stamper. Then find some disposable loose parts… like jar tops, washers….anything that you could glue onto the cork that will provide a textured surface. Let your child help find some things to make into stampers.
It’s almost the weekend, and maybe there is time for the Honeybees to do some measuring and cooking for the family. I’m going to make hummus today, and here’s a recipe for you if you have never made hummus before. It’s so much better than the ones at Kroger. This video starts with making your own tahini, which I’ve never done. I always buy it. You can flavor your hummus any way you like once you have your basic recipe down.
Alright, friends. Put your arms in the air and say it with me. “Wherever you are we wish you well.”
