Lauren and I had decided before spring break that the Honeybee class was going on more worldwide adventures this spring. I feel like we connected with Africa a little this week, so perhaps that will be our first stop.
Here is Africa. Have someone put their finger on where we are… and the continent of Africa is in red. I’ve never been to Africa, but I flew over it in a plane.
Do you remember a few days ago when we said that there were 2000 languages spoken in Africa. We learned a few words in Swahili when we were reading about an animal safari.
Here’s a great album of African Music for kids if you want to check it out.
Last summer we had a weeklong camp learning about Africa, and this was our welcoming song. You might like to learn this dance. Some of the Friendly Foxes will remember singing Funga Alafia. We made drums from our log circles and used our drumsticks to make the music.
Before we learn any more about Africa, let’s make a passport that we can use for the next weeks. If we were at school we’d make and decorate these together. For the Honeybee age group, I’d probably make an 8×10 passport and we could keep adding pages and make a passport book. We could use animal stamps to stamp our passport. Should we use a giraffe or an elephant to stamp our Africa passport?
Here is a map of Africa to add to your passport book.
Here are some African animals to color too.
Here is a song about all the countries inside Africa. I thought you might like to hear their names.
What about African food? Would you like to try some? There are many different kinds of food in Africa. Would you like to see some? I bet we could find something that you might love. My children love injera and delicious Ethiopian food. I think you might love to eat with your hands.
Tomorrow we can dive a little deeper into African art. We’ll make some traditional dolls, roll paper beads, and make a mask.
