Dear Honeybee Families,
That was one of my favorite farm visits of all time. I’m always thrilled to see kids eat turnips for the first time…. right out of the ground. If your family could not join us, you can always take a free self guided tour of the farm. Just walk in one beautiful evening. We can tell you where to find the pigs. Be cautious of the electric fencing, but the dogs are very friendly. Tuesday the farmstand is offering some free veggies and pullet eggs from 3-6 as they kick off their main summer farmshare.
It is wonderful to hear Farmer Sally talk about her job. They whole family works on the farm, and she told several stories about her own children. Her son started on the tractor at three and now drives it himself at age seven.
It was incredible to see the Bees gathering eggs in that huge henhouse. So many chickens were laying eggs that they had to wait in line. We got to see hens, roosters, a giant daddy turkey, and ducks. Farmer Sally brought a big bucket of old eggs and bread along for the kids to feed to the pigs.
When we return to school tomorrow, we’ll have one week before our baby chicks start to hatch. I think ours will hatch Monday, and the Friendly Foxes’ eggs will hatch Tuesday. We’ll keep them in the classroom through the week and have lots of loud and exciting chick time.
The Honeybees will have an opportunity to peek inside the egg this week when we “candle” our eggs. We’ll continue to consult our chick development model eggs, and we’ll watch the chick development video here.
Here you can see a chick beginning to develop inside an Olive Egger egg.
We’ll start the week with dinosaurs, quickly transition to paleontology and fossils, experience our own real fossil dig, and then move on to Birds and Backyard Birdwatching by the end of the week. We’ll create our own bird journals and go on some bird walks in the meadow behind the school.
We’ll be introducing some exciting Friendly Fox style school routines in the next three weeks, but I don’t talk about the school year coming to an end soon. It just causes anxiety…. We’ll celebrate the last day when we get there.
I’m looking forward to seeing all of you this week.
Sally
