The Honeybees have been playing their way through artists and art processes this week, and we are looking forward to sharing our art show next Friday. School closes at noon on Friday, and the teachers are having a work afternoon. We’ll present our virtual art show here on the blog and on Instagram.
I incorporate art and “making” in almost everything we do, but we have tried to UNLEASH our own joy and curiosity against a backdrop of stories about well known artists and the techniques they used. We don’t try to recreate famous works of art. We try to “feel” them and create what we feel in response. We have had so many beautiful talks about colors, and of course the Rainbow Man keeps bringing the magic every afternoon even though we know HOW the rainbows are created in our room. We’ve read several books about primary colors and color theory. We have loved Mouse Paint and Mix it Up. This week we are going to make our own rainbow in a collaborative paint mixing experiment.
We have talked about Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Monet, and Jackson Pollock. This week we’ll circle back to Picasso, meet Andy Warhol, and circle back to our clay and upcycled robot sculpture projects. Let’s dress up on Friday. I’ve been telling the kids that art is “your idea” so let’s try to let them create something original. How can we dress up like “ART”? They could be a monochromatic primary color, they could be an artist, a robot, a paintbrush, a dancer…. Picasso’s blue period.
Did your child tell you about Philippe in Monet’s Garden, our storybook about a long legged frog in France who had to escape the frog catcher and went to live in Claude Monet’s garden where he was safe and would not be battered and fried? It does have beautiful illustrations and pictures of Monet’s beautiful garden. We had some hilarious conversations about eating frog legs.
I’m going to change our play kitchen into a grocery store. Would you be willing to bring in some empty food packages to use for groceries? I’ll try to set this up tomorrow afternoon. I have a cash register, Kroger fliers, bags, and play money for them to do some shopping.
